Let’s get weird.
Eddy Ceramics has been my creative outlet since I returned to pottery after an 11 year hiatus in 2021. I work primarily on the wheel to craft the basic shapes I use for my decorated pieces. Each one is then hand-altered, first using a multitude of colored slips and underglazes to bring my illustrations to life. I tend to work in collections, drawing inspiration for my myriad of designs from the flora, fauna, and folklore of Western Pennsylvania and Appalachia. Some groups of pieces are light and whimsical featuring woodland creatures and bright colors, while others have a spooky, eldritch energy that channels local cryptids, superstitions, and hand-me-down tales from our region. Once the colors have been applied, I carve back through the layers of slip and underglaze to reveal the white clay body underneath - a technique called sgraffito, which derives from the Italian word for "to scratch".
No two of my designs are alike; an intentional choice. I want anyone who receives one of my creations to feel like they’ve been gifted a bespoke treasure that cannot and will not be replicated again. This goal is helped along by the magical and unpredictable nature of high-fire ceramics. We can send the same combinations of glazes through the kiln and they come out different every single time - a charming surprise that brings as much joy to me as the maker as it does to folks who purchase my pieces. We all deserve to feel a little special, and I delight in the idea that my fantastical & functional wares can represent that bright spot in someone’s day.
As a member artist since 2022, I work primarily out of Union Project and maintain a small ceramics space at home with the help of my feline assistants.
